MIDI Musical Instrument Digital Interface

Install MIDI-OX windows application. Donations welcome. This software was made for WindowsXP and works better on faster computers.

First Run

The program will scan for MIDI input and output devices. Presets can be loaded for instrument configurations. On First Run MIDI devices are unconnected.

Main Screen

Go to menu Options->MIDI Devices.

MIDI Devices

This panel shows virtual sound devices. We haven't yet connected a physical MIDI device. A synthesizer program is needed to make sounds.

In MIDI Outputs click on 1) Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth. This is a Windows program that is an electronic synthesizer.

Virtual Device

We are going to tell the synthesizer program what notes to play out the speakers using MIDI protocol. It is a virtual device because even though it is only made out of software it will still make sound. Click OK to save.

PC Keyboard Input

See the gray KYB indication in the last screen? When it is bold then MIDIOX will use the PC keyboard as a MIDI keyboard. Menu Actions->Keyboard check to turn on.

This keyboard layout for piano is followed by many softwares. It duplicates the real piano layout. Shift key will change octave.

NM>MNM

On the PC keyboard type the letters nm>mnm then yuiuyu and listen to the melody. Read the text on the computer screen.

You should hear the notes play out the speakers of your PC. You may have to troubleshoot the computer audio.
