This project is created in context of the lecture “Internet of ThingsEcosystems” atthe University of Applied Science Esslingen. It covers the invention of an own IoT Idea and Application from the scratch solving a real-world problem. In the design sprints the students learn about design, implementation (full-stack) and business aspects of Internet of Things applications.

MotivationThe idea for TYP origins from the following scenario: Imagine being on your way to your favorite pub with your car. The bar is located in an high trafficated area. You were stuck for 15 minutes in the traffic before you arrived to your destination. Then the shock: No free parkinglots. So you turn around, go back to the street to search for a free parkinglot in the surrounding area, fighting your way through the traffic again. The result: loss of time, high stress, air polution and late arrival. If you only had known before that all the parkinglots were occupied you could have reacted to it by taking the train or by parking directly in a less trafficated area and taking some time by foot. In a time where free time gets always more precious and life is dominated by stress it gets more and more important to anticipate certain situations.
IdeaOn the basis of the portrayed scenario TYP was created. TYP is short for Track Your Parkinglot and is based on the Implementation of a Particle Photon and an IFTTT - application that connects the Google Assistant with Particle. The Photon is integrated in a parking sign that is placed on the parkinglot to measure with a magnetic-field- and lightsensor if a car is occupying the parkinglot. The application offers to recognize whether a parkinglot is free by simply asking the Google Assistant even while driving your car.
Potential Users- People with a car and a drivers license
- Businesses in trafficated areas and a bad parking situation.
- Customers and employees of a business.
- Private household with one personal parkinglot and more than one car.
A user research with about 20 persons of different ages and different personalities have been asked what they think about TYP. The most of the feedback was positive. the most mentioned things were:
- It solves a big problem
- It is really helpful
- It could reach a big audience
- It is time saving
- It is really useful
The only negative point mentioned a lot of times was the point that handling with the phone while driving is forbidden and dangerous. That was the feedback that let us to integrate the google assistant for TYP. With this solution the user does not have to touch the phone anymore while driving.
After that there have been some conversations with local bars and businesses like Sanitätshaus Cali & Russo that could become partners and customers. They were interested to try out TYP for their parking lots. Some of the workers gave us good feedback as well.

IFTTT:
By calling the Google Assistant it is possible to ask whether the parking lot is free. IFTTT then checks the status of the photon and sends a response back to the user by calling an audio file that tells the user if the parking lot is free or not. This process is based on the following logic:
Two Applications of IFTTT are connected to our system:
First app:
IFTTT Provides the ability to use the Google Assistant in combination with Particle Photon. A voice command is set and through activation a function is called. This function executes an event.
Second app:
The second app plays an audio file that signals if the parking lot is free. The audio file is played, when a specific event occurs in particle.
